Technically Speaking- Jaz

The Technical Rehearsal, to me, is full of the most discovery.

In the rehearsal hall, the actor pantomimes opening the door.

How the door actually opens does, in fact, affect the way that the actor opens the door.

Then, the way that the actor opens the door affects the character...to a limited extent, certainly, but those little adjustments compound.

If the door is heavier or lighter than the actor anticipates or swings in the opposite direction than they had imagined, it has a momentary impact on how they make their entrance…

Having a real couch to recline upon on stage versus a couple of folding chairs set side by side by side in rehearsal...

Standing a full level above another character...

Hearing the music before the scene...

Each of these tangible things adds an imperceptible dimension.

Add the layers of costume & accessories which change the way the actor moves & carries themself & before you know it, all that imaginative thought becomes visible reality.

For me, the night before tech is just like the night before a road trip.

It’s hard to sleep, thinking about all the things you wanna’ bring & double-checking that you packed properly & imagining what it’s gonna’ be like & what you’re gonna’ see & you just can’t wait to get to your destination even though you know the journey’s gonna’ be the funnest part…

Yeah.

That’s what tech is like for me…

Almost there.

Two previews to go.

More news next week.
